Trauma can leave the nervous system stuck in a state of heightened alert, sometimes called hyperarousal, or in a shut-down state, sometimes called hypoarousal. In hyperarousal, you might experience a racing heart, difficulty sleeping, irritability, or a constant sense of being on edge. In hypoarousal, you might notice fatigue, emotional numbness, brain fog, or feeling disconnected from your own body.
Clinicians often describe a "window of tolerance," the zone where you can experience stress and still think clearly, stay present, and respond thoughtfully. Trauma tends to narrow that window, so smaller stressors can push someone into hyperarousal or hypoarousal much more easily than before.
